Ghonorrhea soon untreatable

CondomsThe World Health Organization (WHO) said today that Gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that infects millions of people each year, is becoming increasingly resistant to medication, and therefore quickly be untreatable. The Health Organization of the United Nations calls on Governments and doctors to be aware when cases of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea occur.

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection causing inflammation, infertility and complications during pregnancy. In the worst case it leads to death. Children, whose mother was infected during pregnancy, have fifty percent chance of an eye infection that can lead to blindness.

"This organism has in fact created a resistance against any medication with which we tried to concur it," Manjula Lusti-Narasimhan of the WHO says. The organization has drawn up a global action plan to tackle the disease. "It is not a European problem or an African problem; it is truly a global problem."
After gonorrhea, Chlamydia is the sexual disorder that most often is transferred. According to the WHO, each year 106 million people become infected with gonorrhea. People who are infected with STDs are also more at risk of becoming infected with other diseases such as HIV.

Not only the use of antibiotics needs to be more controlled, there is also an increasing need for better sex education. The only way to prevent infection is the proper use of condoms. "It will not succeed to eradicate the risk completely, but we can limit the spread," said Lusti-Narasimhan
