Tips for men: shaven, not scratched ;-)

MediaSDCPubic hair. It's not only women who grab a razor blade now and then to trim or even remove every little hair. Also men keep more and more on top of their under-the-belt grooming. But shaving your hair 'down south' can be tricky because there are a lot of things to go wrong. With these 7 simple tips you get by without a little help from a friend.

  1. First time
Start removing the long hairs first. A beard or hair trimmer will do that job.On the scrotum you better use scissors to trim because the skin is very thin and loose and it can get stuck in the electric razor.
  2. It is all about position
When the you start to manscape, the best position is to lay on your bed on your back. Another fine shaving place is in a bath or on a toilet because your genitals are accessible while sitting down.
Other possible positions are under the shower. Both in the bath and under the shower you will have the benefit of running water to rinse your blade.
  3. Take your time
Don't rush. Shaving your private parts five minutes before going out for a date will create a blood painting for sure. Make sure you have the bath- or bedroom for yourself for the time it takes for you to shave.
  4. Use a shaving cream
Lather the area with shaving cream. Avoid creams with mentol or those who are scented as they will irritate the skin. Using a good shaving gel or cream will minimize irritation.
  5. The hard work
    a. Always use new razor blades. Shave with short and very light strokes. Make sure the skin is taut because when the skin is too loose, shaving can lead to cuts.
    b. Rinse the blade after each stroke.
    c. Do not give any pressure to the blade when shaving.
    d. For the smoothest result: shave against the direction of the hair growth. But only if the hair is already short enough to do so.
    e. Shave the penis by holding it to the side.
    f. Shaving between the penis and scrotum will work best by holding the penis right up and then shave downwards.
    g. Shaving the scrotum will go much easier when the skin is extended. Shave from the middle to the sides.
    h. Clean and rins when you are satisfied with the result. Pad dry!
  6. After care
To minimize skin irritation you can use an antiseptic cream, baby powder or baby oil. Exfoliating after a day or so will reset the hair shaft and therefore prevents the hair to grow in.
  7. The right stuff
Use the right equipment. And keep your shaving tools away from hers!

Do not:

  • Use chemical depilarories! They are not suited for genitals.
  • Leave hair in the bath tub or around the toilet!
  • Create an unwanted 'master piece' down there. Keep it simple and don't make your spouse, or date, burst out in tears of laughter, because you have created a silly look.

Make sure there is good ventilation to allow the skin to breathe

Having been manscaping with a variety of methods for years, a razor and shaving cream is the absolute worst method possible. I've tried a lot of trimmers and the combo that I have been using for 10+ years are the Cleancut PS335 T-Shaped Personal Shaver and the Cleancut ES412. You start with the T-Shaped to get all the hair down to a stubble and then use the ES412 to take the stubble down to smooth.

I use the ES412 daily to keep myself smooth. On a night that we are going to play, I will do a quick touchup before our friends arrive so there is no 5 o'clock shadow. Every couple of weeks you will need to use the t-shaped trimmer to take care of some of the hairs that managed to not get trimmed with the ES412.

This is so much easier than razors and MUCH lower risk of nicks and cuts.

I already shave "down under" for more than 25 years, in that time I found out that the absolute best method (for me) is shaving in the shower with a multiblade razor (eg Gillette Mach4, Wilkinson sword etc) and NOT a disposable razor. This in combination with a good shaving oil or baby oil. the advantage of a good shaving oil is that you only need a couple of drops and babyoil will wash away much quicker in the shower so you definitely will need much more.

Be sure to rinse your blade as often as possible and due to the fact your shave in the shower there is always enough water to make the blade moist.

As a final tip I would say shave against the grain, this will guaranty a smooth result for much longer, but be sure to exfoliate every 2 - 3 days to avoid ingrown hairs

happy shavings

After 3 years of shaving (all good advice given above), I had laser removal of genital area hair. It took 6 treatments over six months (& costs about $1500 in the NY metro area) but was worth every cent. Smooth as a baby now & increases the sense of touch when two bodies connect down there.....very sensual & women love it!!
